Ingredients:
For the meat sauce:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 500g (1 lb) ground beef or a mix of beef and pork
- 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
For the béchamel sauce:
- 50g (about 3.5 tablespoons) butter
- 50g (about 1/3 cup) all-purpose flour
- 500ml (2 cups) milk
- A pinch of nutmeg
- Salt to taste
Other ingredients:
- 9–12 lasagna noodles (pre-cooked or no-boil)
- 300g (about 10 oz) mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 100g (about 3.5 oz) Parmesan cheese, grated
Instructions:
- Prepare the meat sauce: Heat olive oil in a pan. Sauté the onion and garlic until translucent. Add the meat and cook until browned. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
- Make the béchamel sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes. Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly until thickened. Season with salt and a pinch of nutmeg.
- Assemble the lasagna: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). In a baking dish, spread a layer of meat sauce. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over it. Add a layer of béchamel sauce, then a layer of mozzarella. Repeat the layers, finishing with béchamel and a generous topping of Parmesan cheese.
- Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes, until golden and bubbling.
- Let it rest: Allow the lasagna to rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing. This helps the layers set beautifully.
